Background of the Study: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a prevalent condition that affects both men and women, particularly in older populations. It is characterized by the involuntary loss of urine, which can significantly impact an individual’s physical, emotional, and social well-being (Choudhury et al., 2024). The condition has a profound effect on the quality of life (QoL) of affected individuals, contributing to feelings of embarrassment, social isolation, and anxiety. Nurses play a critical role in the management of urinary incontinence, which includes assessment, patient education, symptom management, and emotional support (Benson et al., 2023). While there is a growing body of research highlighting the role of healthcare professionals in addressing UI, the specific contributions of nurses remain underexplored, particularly in regions like Bauchi State.

In Bauchi State, healthcare facilities face challenges such as inadequate training, limited resources, and a lack of specialized care for conditions like UI (Bala et al., 2024). However, nurses have the potential to improve patients’ QoL by providing appropriate care and support, including recommending behavioral therapies, managing medications, and facilitating continence products for patients. Despite the importance of nurses in the management of urinary incontinence, there is little documented research on the impact of nursing interventions on patients' QoL in Bauchi State. This study seeks to assess how nurses can improve the quality of life of individuals suffering from UI in Bauchi State healthcare facilities by examining their role in patient management.

Statement of the Problem: Urinary incontinence significantly diminishes the quality of life for many individuals in Bauchi State. While nurses are integral to managing this condition, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment of their role in improving patients’ quality of life in local healthcare settings. This research seeks to evaluate how nursing interventions impact the QoL of patients with UI in Bauchi State healthcare facilities, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and informing future practice.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the role of nurses in managing urinary incontinence and improving the quality of life of affected patients in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.
  2. To assess the impact of nursing interventions on the physical, emotional, and social well-being of patients with urinary incontinence in Bauchi State.
  3. To identify barriers and facilitators to effective nursing care for patients with urinary incontinence in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.

Research Questions:

  1. What role do nurses play in improving the quality of life for patients with urinary incontinence in Bauchi State healthcare facilities?
  2. How do nursing interventions impact the physical, emotional, and social well-being of patients with urinary incontinence?
  3. What factors affect the effectiveness of nursing interventions for patients with urinary incontinence in Bauchi State healthcare facilities?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses' interventions significantly improve the quality of life for patients with urinary incontinence in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.
  2. There is a significant relationship between the level of nurse training and the effectiveness of interventions for urinary incontinence.
  3. Barriers such as limited resources and inadequate training significantly hinder the ability of nurses to effectively manage urinary incontinence in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on Bauchi State healthcare facilities, specifically those providing care to patients with urinary incontinence. It will assess nurses’ role in improving patients’ quality of life through various interventions. Limitations include the potential for small sample sizes and data biases due to self-reporting by nurses.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urinary incontinence (UI): The involuntary loss of urine, which can result from various underlying medical conditions or lifestyle factors.
  • Quality of life (QoL): A multi-dimensional concept that reflects an individual's overall physical, emotional, and social well-being.
  • Nursing interventions: Actions or treatments provided by nurses to manage health conditions, improve patient outcomes, and enhance well-being.
